India’s Yuki Bhambri caused a massive upset at the ATP Citi Open, beating defending champion Gael Monfils on Wednesday (August 2).
The 25-year-old, who had secured qualification for the main draw of the ATP 500 tournament, produced an excellent performance to defeat the Frenchman 6-3 4-6 7-5 to enter the Round of 16.
“This is what every tennis player dreams of. This is where every tennis player wants to be,” Bhambri said after his win. “It’s a huge confidence booster for me to know that I belong here. I can compete with the best.
“Definitely one of the biggest wins of my career. I hung in there and fought my way through. It gives me a lot of confidence going into my next match.”
Bhambri will face Argentina’s Guido Pella in the Round of 16 on Thursday.
