The Pay Per Views keep coming thick and fast, and this Sunday, we will witness the return of Brock Lesnar. Lesnar last competed at WrestleMania 33, where he defeated Bill Goldberg to capture the Universal Championship.
At WWE Great Balls of Fire, Brock will put the gold on the line against “The Samoan Submission Machine”, Samoa Joe. Joe has done what no one else has been able to do so far – push Lesnar to the edge. Not too long ago, Joe choked Paul Heyman out, and a couple of weeks later, did the same thing to The Beast Incarnate.
The other big bout going into the show will be the one between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman. The rivalry between both the Superstars escalated when Reigns took Strowman out. The Monster Among Men returned earlier than expected, and set his sights on The Big Dog. Both their paths will once again meet at GBOF, as Strowman looks to exact his revenge in an Ambulance Match!
With just under 12 hours to go for the PPV, here are our last minute predictions for Great Balls of Fire.
Kick off match:
Neville versus Akira Tozawa (with Titus O’Neil) for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship
Austin Aries, who until recently challenged Neville for the WWE Cruiserweight Championship was released from the company earlier today. Akira Tozawa will be challenging the champion at WWE Great Balls of Fire. Tozawa, who is the newest recruit to the Titus Brand, was given the opportunity when O’Neil talked to Kurt Angle.
While the whole Titus Brand angle is passe, Tozawa is one of the most respected veterans in the business today. While Neville and Akira will undoubtedly put on a good match, Neville is expected to retain the title this Sunday.
Winner and still the WWE Cruiserweight Champion: Neville
Enzo Amore versus Big Cass
Few weeks ago, Cass finally turned on Enzo. WWE has been waiting to pull the trigger on Cass, as he is someone the company looks at as a future prospect. What that means for Enzo is anyone’s guess at this point, but the two will face off at Great Balls of Fire.
The management is high on Cass, and the Superstar will reportedly be pushed going forward. This would mean that Cass will finally put Enzo behind him, and get into more prominent feuds going forward.
Winner: Big Cass
Seth Rollins versus Bray Wyatt
Going into the PPV, Bray Wyatt, once again has been an after thought. After dropping the WWE title to Randy Orton at WrestleMania 33, Bray has once again served as the proverbial stepping stool for his opponents. The rivalry between Rollins and Wyatt began after Bay started targeting Finn Balor. No reasonable explanation was given, but the two can put on a good match regardless of the circumstances around the feud.
‘The King Slayer’ needs to get back to the main event scene, but with WWE focused on pushing Roman Reigns, it will take some time for Rollins to challenge for the strap. Rollins needs to be built properly and carefully, and who better to do just that than Bray Wyatt?
Winner: Seth Rollins
The Miz (with Maryse and The Miztourage) versus Dean Ambrose for the WWE Intercontinental Championship
The feud between Miz and Dean Ambrose was the most interesting rivalry on RAW for weeks – but that was until Samoa Joe was given the ball to run with. The Miz beat Ambrose to capture the Intercontinental Championship, and the Lunatic Fringe will have the chance to get his hands on the champion, and the title at Great Balls of Fire.
The Miz has found allies in Bo Dallas and Curtis Axel – The Miztourage. ‘The A – Lister’ has been putting on memorable segments week after week on RAW, and this Sunday, he will have the chance to notch up yet another victory over Ambrose. Expect The Miz to retain the title, as WWE would want him to hold on to the title for some more time.
Winner and still the WWE Intercontinental Champion: The Miz
Roman Reigns versus Braun Strowman in an Ambulance Match
One of the most eagerly awaited bouts on the card is the one between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman. Couple of months ago, Strowman was penciled in to face Lesnar at Great Balls of Fire. However, with Braun getting injured, WWE had to go with Plan B, and gave the spot to Samoa Joe instead.
However, the plan for SummerSlam remains the same. WWE wants Roman Reigns to challenge – and dethrone Brock Lesnar. While the original timeline was reported to be WrestleMania 34, either Roman or Braun will challenge Lesnar at SummerSlam. With John Cena recently name dropping Reigns, we might get to see Cena go up against Reigns at SummerSlam.
WWE is looking to build Roman as the next face of the company, and that will continue at Great Balls of Fire.
Winner: Roman Reigns
Cesaro and Sheamus versus The Hardy Boyz in a 30 minute Iron Man match for the RAW Tag Team Championship
The tag team champions will put the titles on the line against The Hardys, in a 30 minute Iron Man match. Cesaro and Sheamus usurped The Hardys to win the tag team gold, and the former members of Team Xtreme have set their sights on regaining the RAW Tag Team Championship.
Sheamus and Cesaro have surprisingly formed an interesting dynamic, and their heel turn came at the right time. Matt and Jeff have had their number in recent weeks, but one would expect the champions to have a long run, before dropping the titles.
Winners and still the RAW Tag Team Champions: Cesaro and Sheamus
Alexa Bliss versus Sasha Banks for the RAW Women’s Championship
Alexa Bliss has arguably been the stand out performer out of all the Superstars that were traded during the mini draft. The RAW Women’s Champion has the looks, and the skill set to become one of the best women’s champions of this generation. On the other side of the ring however, is someone that was expected to do great things on RAW, Sasha Banks.
In recent months, WWE decided to put Sasha on the back burner, and focus more on Bliss and Nia Jax. The angle between Nia and Bliss is certain to boil down to a title match between the two, and as such, Bliss is expected to retain the title come Great Balls of Fire.
Winner and still the RAW Women’s Champion: Alexa Bliss
Brock Lesnar (with Paul Heyman) versus Samoa Joe for the WWE Universal Championship
The main event will see Brock Lesnar taking on Samoa Joe. For weeks, the Samoan Submission Machine has managed to get the better of the Universal Champion. From choking out his advocate, to nearly choking out the champion himself, Samoa Joe has managed to send a clear message.
Unlike Lesnar’s past opponents, Joe will not hesitate to take the murkier route, if it means he will capture the Universal title. That makes Joe a formidable opponent for Brock. However, considering WWE has plans for a Lesnar – Strowman and Lesnar – Reigns showdown, Lesnar will likely walk out of Great Balls of Fire as still the Universal Champion.
