This week has certainly been interesting in the world of professional wrestling. From Kenny Omega attacking Chris Jericho, to Vince McMahon’s plans of relaunching the XFL finally being out in the open, it has been a wild ride.
However, one topic takes the cake, and a good deal of the whipped cream too. WWE’s announcement of starting an all – female Royal Rumble match has got the world buzzing. Finally, the women’s revolution has led to the fairer sex getting their thoroughly deserved due in the company.
Stephanie McMahon’s announcement has reverberated not just through the WWE locker room, but everywhere around the world. The decades of handwork and perseverance of Superstars has finally paid off, and the women will get their own platform to showcase their talents in a month’s time. The winner will face either the RAW Women’s Champion, or the SmackDown Women’s Champion at WrestleMania 34.
And just like the anticipation for the men’s Rumble match builds going into the PPV, it will be interesting to see who participates in the women’s Rumble match. Today, we take a look at five potential surprise entrants during the bout.
1. Shayna Baszler
Shayna recently signed a WWE contract, and has already made her way to NXT. The MMA veteran was initially tipped to win the Mae Young Classic, but with Baszler turning down an exclusive contract, WWE went ahead with Kairi Same to win the tournament.
However, Baszler is not expected to stay for a long period on NXT, and while she will still be on the NXT roster at least until WrestleMania, there is a good chance she might make her presence felt at the Royal Rumble – especially because of someone that will appear later on the list.
2. Nikki Bella
The former Divas Champion has taken time off from WWE TV, and while she still stars on Total Bellas, neither Nikki nor Brie have competed in WWE for some time. However, Nikki took to Twitter in support of the all – female Royal Rumble match, and subtly implied that she wouldn’t be averse to participating in it.
Nikki suffered a serious neck injury couple of years ago, and underwent surgery. While that contributed to her taking time off from in – ring competition, she has been rumoured to make her return, and that can very well happen at the Royal Rumble.
3. Candice LeRae
Johnny Gargano’s wife, Candice LeRae has been one of the best independent performers for years. One half of the ‘World’s Cutest Tag Team’ along with Joey Ryan, Candice has broken the barriers on the independent scene, often wrestling against men, and was even involved in a bloody warfare!
Candice participated in the Mae Young Classic, and while she did not win the tournament, one might think it is only a matter of time before she signs with the promotion. Considering the fact that Gargano is currently performing on NXT, Candice would be a great addition to the NXT — or even the main roster.
4. Trish Stratus
The 7 – time WWE Women’s Champion, and a bona fide Hall of Famer recently gave birth, but is still in incredible shape. Trish has kept herself fit all these years by practising yoga, and recently took to Twitter to express her interest in participating in the Royal Rumble.
Trish can do something Goldberg did, which is to return for a short period, win the title and put someone over at WrestleMania. Trish Stratus’ retirement came out of nowhere, and the fans wouldn’t be averse to seeing the former women’s champion having one last run with the title.
5. Ronda Rousey debuting at the Royal Rumble
The biggest name of the lot is undoubtedly the former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. Ronda lost her last fight to Amanda Nunes a year ago, and as things stand, her MMA career seems all but over.
‘Rowdy’ has always been a massive professional wrestling fan, idolising Roddy Piper. Ronda appeared at WrestleMania couple of years ago at WrestleMania 31, taking down Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. Stephanie has since expressed her interest in bringing Ronda to the WWE.
More recently, rumours have started making rounds about Ronda signing up with the company. If that were to happen, doing it at the Royal Rumble would lay the perfect platform, for Rousey to have a marquee match at WrestleMania next year.
