The third ODI between Sri Lanka and India ended on a sour note with a sold out crowd turning hostile towards the performance of their team. Play resumed after the interruption and India scored the remaining eight runs thereby sealing the five match ODI series against the islanders. The game had several noteworthy performances – Lahiru Thirimanne scoring a fine half-century to save his side the blushes, Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery spell of fast bowling and the fantastic partnership between Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni to seal the game for India.
Bumrah claimed the first five-wicket haul of his international career with figures of 5/27 in his spell. The pacer’s fine performance helped India restrict Sri Lanka to a total of 217 runs after good performance from Thirimanne with the bat. India began the chase with the early losses of Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli even before Akila Dananjaya was introduced. The spinner, fresh off a six-wicket haul in the last game came into the attack and picked up the wickets of KL Rahul and Kedar Jadhav in quick succession. With the game drifting away from India, MS Dhoni came to the batting crease and brought his sense of calm to the game. He begun to rotate the strike and build a partnership with Rohit Sharma at the other end, who played his strokes whenever a bad ball came along.
After early troubles in the chase, the two batsmen put together a fine partnership of 157 runs for the fifth wicket as Rohit brought up his 12th ODI hundred. Dhoni then went on to score his 65th ODI fifty and went past Mohammad Azharuddin to become India’s fourth highest run scorer in ODI cricket.
