T20 World Cup 2016 – Pakistan Squad Review

After the last-minute political drama and dialogue between the two nations, Pakistan have finally agreed to travel to India for the 2016 T20 World Cup. No one really knows what to expect from Pakistan – they could either take the tournament by storm or produce mediocre performances through the tournament. They are heading into the T20 World Cup after a poor showing in the recently concluded Asia Cup, losing key matches against Bangladesh and India, so the current squad will have to play exceptionally well to defy the odds and qualify for the semi-finals.

Can Pakistan win the 2016 T20 World Cup? Let’s take a look.

For

  • Experienced middle order batsmen, consisting of Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik and Shahid Afridi.
  • The return of Mohammad Amir has given the bowling unit a shot in the arm.
  • The impending Shahid Afridi retirement after the tournament may give the side a little extra motivation.

 Against

  • Barring Mohammad Hafeez, there is a lack of experienced batsmen in the top order.
  • The side is missing a front-line spinner.
  • Pakistan have a terrible record chasing targets and on the turning tracks in India, their inefficiency while batting in the second innings will hinder their chances.

Probable Finish: Group Stages

With Bangladesh most likely to qualify for the Super 10s, Pakistan will be facing an enormous task of making the knockout stages. They will have to put in top-notch performances to get wins against Bangladesh, New Zealand, Australia and favourites India. Their recent form dictates that they could have a horrible tournament, but this is Pakistan we are trying to predict, so we can never be sure.
