India’s T20 squad: Legends speak

India begins its T20 World Cup campaign against New Zealand today. We’ve put together a quick compilation of quotes on the Indian team – including the factors that have led to their current run of form, and why India are favoured to win the 2016 T20 World Cup.

We had to begin a legend’s compilation with the Master Blaster himself, Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar points to the team’s diverse bowling attack, as well as their balance of youth and experience as crucial factors, heading into the tournament.

Matthew Hayden points out that this tournament is likely to be a spinner’s World Cup, and that’s where India possesses a significant advantage. He also points to India’s part-timers, that can easily contribute additional overs of spin if required.

VVS Laxman hails the Indian team’s improved fielding ability, and points out that things have changed significantly from the time he played!

Mohammed Shami is unlikely to make the playing XI, and has had trouble with injuries since the 2015 World Cup. Shoaib Akhtar though, continues to have a very high opinion of Shami’s abilities, and even helped him with his action. Watch Shoaib’s opinion on Shami – he believes Shami’s skill with the new ball makes him a lot better than some of the Pakistani fast bowlers.
