Things are heating up in the world of WWE, as Royal Rumble draws closer. With John Cena set to challenge AJ Styles for the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble, both Superstars have been trying to get the better of each other, with Cena sending a message to Styles last week by defeating Baron Corbin.
Going into this week’s episode, WWE teased a big announcement by the SmackDown Live Commissioner, Shane McMahon. Also scheduled for this week’s show was a Steel Cage match between Becky Lynch, and the WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion, Alexa Bliss for the title. So what transpired on this week’s show? Let’s take a closer look.
Shane McMahon drops a bombshell
This week’s episode kicked off with the Commissioner of SmackDown Live, Shane McMahon making his way out to the ring. The WWE Universe gave Shane a good reception, as the young McMahon talked about the Royal Rumble. Shane talked about the WWE Championship match, and turned his attention to the next SmackDown Live exclusive PPV.
Shane then announced the return of the Elimination Chamber, and said the WWE title would be defended in an Elimination Chamber match next month! AJ Styles made his way out, and wasn’t happy with Shane’s decision. AJ was interrupted by John Cena and The Miz, as the former Intercontinental Champion and the number one contender for the WWE Championship traded insults.
Shane then announced a match between the two on the show.
Backstage, Dean Ambrose demanded a match with Randy Orton.
AJ Styles faced The Miz, with John Cena on commentary. The action spilled out of the ring, and AJ threw The Miz onto Cena. The referee then stopped the match, as Cena dropped AJ and The Miz with Attitude Adjustments.
Nikki Bella made her way out for a promo, but Natalya interrupted her, as she was shown walking near the merchandise area backstage. Natalya complained about not having her own merchandise, and knocked her uncle Bret. Nikki then found Natalya backstage, and the two women got into a scuffle.
Frustrations boil over as the Wyatt Family implodes
The WWE Intercontinental Champion wanted to face Randy Orton, due to Orton’s recent actions. During the bout, Bray Wyatt and Luke Harper distracted Ambrose, giving Orton the upper hand. After some back and forth action, Ambrose took Harper out with a suicide dive on the outside. Harper wasn’t pleased with Ambrose’s attack, and tried to get involved in the match.
However, Harper’s interference distracted Orton, as Ambrose rolled him up to pick up the victory! Post match, Orton and Harper exchanged words and got into a fist fight, but were separated by Bray Wyatt. Wyatt then dropped Harper with a punch, as the Wyatt Family looked more fragile than ever before.
Dolph Ziggler is a changed man
In recent weeks, Ziggler has taken his frustrations out on Kalisto and Apollo Creed, and on this week’s episode, he was a guest on the “King’s Court” segment, hosted by Jerry “The King” Lawler. Lawler questioned Ziggler’s attitude, and his recent behaviour. Lawler then asked Ziggler about his recent losing streak, as Ziggler remained silent.
Ziggler finally had heard enough, and threatened Lawler. Ziggler showed footage of him attacking Lawler few years ago, with an elbow to King’s chest. Ziggler told King that he had a heart attack because of that, and Ziggler said he would “finish the job” the next time. Lawler called Ziggler a loser, and “The Showoff” proceeded to kick Lawler in the chest.
Lawler invited Ziggler back inside the ring, but Ziggler hightailed to the back.
Bray Wyatt then announced a match between Randy Orton and Luke Harper on next week’s show.
Identity of La Luchadora revealed
In the main event, Alexa Bliss defended the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Becky Lynch inside a Steel Cage. The Steel Cage match was announced last week, with the intention of keeping La Luchadora out of the equation. Alexa and Becky were involved in a back and forth bout, and just as it looked like Becky would escape through the cage door, La Luchadora showed up and blocked the exit.
La Luchadora then attacked Becky, and Alexa dropped the former SmackDown Women’s Champion with a DDT to pick up the victory, and hence retained her title. After the match, Becky unmasked La Luchadora, and it turned out to be Mickie James! However, Mickie and Alexa overpowered Becky and laid her out, as Mickie raised Alexa’s arm to bring down the curtains on the show.
