World #1 Serena Williams won her seventh Wimbledon title, beating the #4 seed Angelique Kerber in straight sets. Despite the final score reading 7-5 6-3, the match was pretty evenly contested between the two finalists, but in the end, Serena’s serve proved to be too much for the German to handle in the second set. Kerber had beaten Williams in the Australian Open final in January but she could not repeat the shock at Centre Court in Wimbledon. Serena has now equalled Steffi Graf’s Open era record of 22 major titles and will be hoping to overtake her come the US Open later this year.
Later on, Serena and her sister Venus Williams claimed their sixth Wimbledon women’s doubles title, with a 6-3 6-4 win over Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova. This is their 14th Grand Slam trophy as a pair.
In the all-French men’s doubles final, it was the #1 seeded pair of Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert who went on to win 6-4 7-6 6-3 against Julien Benneteau and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
