NXT TakeOver: San Antonio Results

With Royal Rumble just hours away, the Superstars from NXT had their moment in the sun, with NXT rolling out with yet another edition of NXT TakeOver. In the main event, Shinsuke Nakamura defended the NXT title against Bobby Roode, while Asuka defended the NXT Women’s title against not one, but three other Superstars!

DIY put the tag team gold on the line against the monstrous duo of Authors Of Pain. Also, Roderick Strong faced Andrade Almas. Samoa Joe was also present at ringside, with rumours making rounds about Joe making his main roster debut during the Royal Rumble match. Did we crown new champions? What transpired during the recent instalment of NXT TakeOver? Let’s take a look.

Eric Young defeated Tye Dillinger

The first bout of the night was between Eric Young and the “Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger. Before the match began, Young gave Dillinger another opportunity to join SAnitY. Dillinger refused, and threw the jacket in Young’s face. Young and Tye were involved in a back and forth match, before the other members of SAnitY got involved.

Dillinger managed to fight them off, and almost picked up the victory, but Young’s foot was placed on the bottom rope by one of the members of SAnitY. After some more back and forth action, Young was able to connect with his neck breaker finisher to pick up the victory.

Samoa Joe was then shown watching at ringside.

Roderick Strong defeated Andrade “Cien” Almas

The NXT crowd gave Strong a big ovation, and started the “Roddy” chants quite early. Roderick looked impressive, as he took on Andrade Almas. After some back and forth action, Strong connected with a beautiful back breaker off the top rope.

In the end, Strong connected with a running kick to pick up the victory.

Authors of Pain defeated DIY to win the NXT Tag Team titles

The behemoth duo have been running amok on NXT, and faced Gargano and Ciampa last night for the tag team gold. DIY have been phenomenal in 2016, and their first defence in 2017 saw them go up against the monstrous duo. Gargano and Ciampa started impressively, using their speed to their advantage. However, Gargano was eventually stopped and worked on, as the crowd got behind Johnny.

Ciampa finally got the hot tag, as he cleaned house. Ciampa and Gargano connected with stereo spears, and locked in submissions, but AOP managed to power out of the predicament. They then dropped DIY with stereo powerbombs, and connected with their finisher to pick up the victory, and became the new NXT Tag Team Champions!

Seth Rollins made his way out, and called Triple H out. Triple H finally answered Seth’s call, but brought security with him to throw Rollins out of the building. However, Seth fought the security personnel and cleaned house. More people came out to restrain Rollins, and threw him out of the building.

Asuka defeated Billie Kay, Nikki Cross and Peyton Royce to retain the NXT Women’s Championship

Asuka defended the NXT Women’s Championship in a fatal four way match, and drilled Kay and Royce with German Suplexes. Nikki and Asuka then stared each other down, and both women went at it. However, Royce and Kay worked together, and put Cross through the announce table!

Peyton Royce and Billie Kay then double teamed Asuka, but the champion managed to fight them off, and connected with kicks to pin Royce, and retained the Women’s Championship in the process.

Bobby Roode defeated Shinsuke Nakamura to win the NXT Championship

In the main event, Roode took on Nakamura for the NXT title. Both the Superstars got a great reception, as Roode got the upper hand in the early going. Bobby managed to use his wits to gain control, but Nakamura turned the tables with a knee strike on the apron. However, Nakamura hurt his knee in the process, and Roode capitalised on the situation.

Nakamura connected with a Kinshasa knee strike, but couldn’t take advantage due to his knee. The doctors checked on Nakamura, but he wanted to continue. Roode connected with the Glorious DDT, but Shinsuke kicked out at 2! Roode then locked Nakamura in a half – Boston, but Nakamura wouldn’t give up! Roode connected with yet another Glorious DDT to pick up the victory, and became the new NXT Champion in the process.
