Speaking about MS Dhoni’s record in T20 cricket, former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly said on Wednesday that while Dhoni is a ‘champion’ player when it comes to ODI cricket, the same cannot be said about him in T20 cricket. Ganguly was quoted by PTI, saying, “I am not too sure if Dhoni is a good T20 player. He is a champion ODI player but when it comes to T20 cricket, in 10 years, he has got one fifty and that’s not the best record.”
Dhoni captained Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL last season, but has been relieved of captaincy duties this season, with Steve Smith being given the responsibility instead. He has not lived up to expectations so far this season.
However, Ganguly said that he would still pick Dhoni for India’s ICC Champions Trophy squad, as he is too good an ODI player to be left out. “I will pick Dhoni for the Champions Trophy but he has to score runs.” Even former Australian captain Michael Clarke said that “Dhoni has to score runs for himself. As a professional, he has to.”
Dhoni has played three games for RPS this season, registering scores of 12 not out, 5 and 11.
