New Zealand vs Pakistan (Group 2) – Major Talking Points

New Zealand became the first team to enter the semi-finals of the 2016 T20 World Cup as they beat Pakistan by 22 runs in their group stage encounter. Kane Williamson won the toss and elected to bat on a green wicket in Mohali and his side scored 180 runs in the first innings, courtesy a wonderful 80 by Martin Guptill at the top. Pakistan fell short by 22 runs despite the early blitz provided by Sharjeel Khan and Ahmed Shehzad. Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi tried to redeem the chase, but the New Zealand spinners restricted the opposition and ensured that their side grabbed the two points.

As New Zealand continued their unbeaten run in the tournament, let us look at some of the major moments from their match against Pakistan.

Martin Guptill fires

Guptill finally produced a big innings for New Zealand at the top of the order in this tournament. He attacked Pakistan’s best bowlers, Mohammad Amir and Shahid Afridi and scored an outstanding 80 from 48 balls which included 10 fours and three sixes.

Mohammad Sami picked up two wickets against New Zealand (espncricinfo).

Mohammad Sami produced a decent spell of bowling amongst the carnage during the New Zealand innings. He picked up the crucial wickets of Martin Guptill and Luke Ronchi and conceded only 23 runs in his four overs.

Sharjeel provides explosive start

The Pakistan opener provided a blitz at the start of the chase, getting his side to 50 in four overs. He finished with 47 runs off 25 balls, which including nine boundaries and one six.

Ish Sodhi derails Pakistan chase

Ish Sodhi picked up the crucial wicket of Shahid Afridi (espncricinfo).

Pakistan were cruising towards the target of 181 when Ish Sodhi was introduced into the attack. He bowled a brilliant spell of 1 for 25 which included the crucial wicket of Shahid Afridi and jolted the Pakistan chase.

Pakistan will face Australia in a do or die match in Mohali on Friday and New Zealand will play against Bangladesh in Kolkata on Saturday.
