Mirabai Chanu became India’s first Gold medalist at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, sealing the top spot in the Women’s 48Kg Weightlifting competition on Thursday (April 5).
The 23-year-old finished with a record score of 196kg, breaking both the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records!
It was a flawless performance by the current World Champion, living up to the hype that surrounded the pre-tournament favourite. She started of her Snatch attempt with 80kg, then followed it up with 84kg and 86kg in her second and third attempts. Mirabai sealed the Gold medal with her first lift of 103kg in her Clean and Jerk attempt. Later on, she overcame her personal best by sucessfully taking on 110kg in her final attempt.
Stunningly enough, all of Mirabai’s six attempts were Commonwealth Games records!
The silver medal was won by Marie Hanrita Ranaivosoa of Mauritius, registering a score of 170kg, 26kg behind first place. Sri Lanka’s Dinusha Gomes secured bronze with a total lift of 155kg.
Earlier in the day, Gururaj had opened India’s account with a silver medal in the men’s 56 kg event with a total lift of 249 kg.
