The Mumbai Indians were favourites ahead of their opening game against Rising Pune Supergiant at Pune today. Winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Pune didn’t have the best of starts with Jos Buttler and Parthiv Patel hitting the ball well right from the start. Smith introduced Imran Tahir into the attack within the power play and he was successful in dismissing Parthiv. Buttler continued to go after the bowling even though MI lost two more wickets to Tahir. Lesser known Nitish Rana supported Buttler well to keep the scoreboard ticking along. Thanks to a late blitz from Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard, Mumbai managed to get 184 runs on the board.
RPS began their chase of 185 fluently with Rahane continuing his good form from the Test series into the T20 format. Rahane was timing the ball perfectly as he scored 60 off just 34 deliveries. Steve Smith continued from where Rahane left off, playing one of the best T20 innings of his career. Smith started off solid, rotating the strike but was quick to adjust to the aggressor’s role once Rahane was dismissed. Ben Stokes and M.S.Dhoni also had a bat, but it was skipper Smith who took the side across the finish line with two massive sixes.
