The opening ceremony of the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League may have been a spectacular affair but it fell way short on the day, when compared to the fireworks Brendon McCullum displayed. The Kolkata Knight Riders batsman hit an incredible unbeaten 158 off just 73 balls against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, becoming the highest individual scorer in T20 cricket at the time. It was raining sixes and fours at the Chinaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The crowd may have been disappointed that their side was at the receiving end of that knock but everybody went home witnessing one of the most extraordinary innings ever played. Perfect launch for the grandest tournament in the game.
