The tenth edition of the Indian Premier League finally kicked off at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad this evening. After an entertaining opening ceremony, it was time for cricket to take centre stage as the opening game of the season was to be played between last year’s finalists. The Royal Challengers Bangalore won the toss and elected to field first under the leadership of Shane Watson in the absence of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. The Sunrisers Hyderabad started off well despite losing David Warner early as Shikhar Dhawan and Moises Henriques put on a good partnership.
The star of the evening though was Yuvraj Singh who scored 62 off 27 deliveries to take SRH’s total to over 200 runs. Yuvraj was at his best and he played his shots fearlessly right from the start. Chasing 208, RCB made a strong start with Chris Gayle and Mandeep Singh both scoring quickly. The first Afghanistan cricketer to be playing in the IPL, Rashid Khan made an impact as soon as he was introduced as he dismissed Mandeep and slowed down the scoring rate. RCB didn’t have much firepower in their middle order and eventually were dismissed for 172.
