India’s T20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana are set to lead opposite teams in a women’s exhibition T20 game set to be held on May 22, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Tuesday (May 15).
“Even as IPL continues to roll like a well-oiled machine, over the last couple of weeks, efforts were made to put in place a similar structure for women cricketers,” IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said in a BCCI release. “We were in talks with several Boards and I am pleased with the outcome.”
Similar to the composition of an IPL playing XI, both sides will comprise of four foreign players.
The BCCI confirmed the participation of Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry, wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy, medium-pacer Megan Schutt and batter Beth Mooney. New Zealand captain Suzie Bates and all-rounder Sophie Devine, England’s Danielle Wyatt and Danielle Hazell will also make the travel.
The game will also feature India’s ODI skipper Mithali Raj, pacer Jhulan Goswami, batter Veda Krishanmurthy among others.
“BCCI has been pulling out all stops to promote and nurture women’s cricket and this is a small yet significant step towards a prospective league involving women’s stars in the future,” Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji said. “The IPL is the biggest and most popular league in the world and it has been a long-time endeavour to have a women’s league that can match the exuberance of IPL,” she added
The T20 game will be held prior to IPL Qualifier 1 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The match will begin at 2pm and will be telecast worldwide.
