Former India all-rounder Kapil Dev stated that Hardik Pandya does not deserve to be compared with him if he keeps making silly mistakes like he did in the second Test against South Africa.
Considered as India’s best all-rounder since the retirement of the former World Cup winner, Pandya has risen through the ranks at a high pace and lately has been making inroads in the Test side. While his knock at Cape Town kept India in the hunt, his errors in the second Test has cost his side the Centurion Test and eventually the series.
“If Pandya keeps making silly mistakes like these then he doesn’t deserve to be compared with me,” Dev told ‘ABP’ news as per PTI’s report, reacting to Pandya’s dismissal in the second innings.
The all-rounder was dismissed trying to cut a delivery extremely wide and only managed an edge to Quinton de Kock as India faced a daunting task of chasing down 287. In the first innings, Pandya was casual in his return to the crease after being declined a quick single and Vernon Philander effected a direct-hit from mid-on, ending a promising 45-run partnership between him and Virat Kohli.
“He definitely has a lot of talent, he has shown it in the first Test, but I believe he needs to work on the mental aspect.” Kapil said.
Former India cricketer Sandeep Patil also opined that comparing the two was not ideal because Pandya is still in early stages of his cricketing career.
“I have played a lot of cricket with Kapil, really there is no comparison.Kapil played 15 years for India with terrific performance and Pandya is only in his fifth Test match. There is a long way to go,” Patil said.
