Superstar Shake-Up: Are Roman Reigns and AJ Styles about to switch brands?
As seen on this past week’s episode of Monday Night RAW, Vince McMahon ‘shook things up’, by announcing a WWE draft of sorts next week. The two night event will see Superstars switching brands, while it remains to be seen how many picks RAW and SmackDown Live would get. During the previous WWE Draft, RAW got three picks for every two SmackDown Live picks.
A new batch of Superstars are usually called up after WrestleMania, and we will undoubtedly see a bunch of NXT Superstars moving up to the main roster. However, a few established stars would be making the move as well, with WWE usually drafting a top Superstar from RAW to the blue brand, while bringing a big name from SmackDown Live to the red brand.
Today, we take a look at five Superstars from the main roster that could switch brands during the Superstar Shake-Up.
The Miz (with Maryse)
The writing has been on the wall for Miz to be drafted to RAW for quite a while now. Towards the end of 2016, The Miz once again hit his stride, and showed the world what he is truly capable of. Since then, The Miz has been top notch on the microphone, but wasn’t given a high profile feud going into WrestleMania. The Miz and Maryse faced Cena and Nikki Bella, and with Cena taking time off, it is now the perfect time for Miz to be drafted to RAW.
On this week’s episode of SmackDown Live, Shinsuke Nakamura interrupted The Miz and Maryse, and while a program with Nakamura would make Miz look like a million bucks in the ring, it feels highly unlikely that ‘The A – Lister’ would stay on SmackDown Live post next week’s ‘Superstar Shake-Up’.
If there is one Superstar that is being grossly under-utilised in the WWE, it has to be Sami Zayn. The former NXT Champion is one of the best wrestlers on the planet, and is one of the most marketable faces in the industry. However, he finds himself in the middle of nowhere on Monday Night RAW, and has been angling to be traded to SmackDown Live for the past few months.
There was a ray of hope, with Mick Foley challenging Sami Zayn to step up and prove himself. However, that program went nowhere, and with Mick Foley gone, it makes all the sense in the world to draft Sami Zayn to SmackDown Live. Moreover, Sami and Bryan have similar personalities, and Sami could resurrect his WWE career, working with Daniel Bryan and the SmackDown Live roster.
Similar to Sami Zayn, Cesaro was previously vocal about going to SmackDown Live, and working with Daniel Bryan. Cesaro was left in a limbo few months ago, and was thrown into a program with Sheamus that was going nowhere. However, Cesaro and Sheamus have worked well together, and the odd – couple even won the RAW Tag Team Championship for a brief period!
Saying that, Cesaro is being under-utilised on RAW, and his services would be put to better use on the blue brand. Cesaro is one of the most talented wrestlers in the world today, and while Vince McMahon doesn’t see him as a future world champion, Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan would be ecstatic to have the Swiss Superman on their roster.
The former WWE Champion has had a phenomenal year, and ever since he moved to SmackDown Live during the WWE Draft in 2016, AJ has proved to be a game changer. AJ won the WWE Championship from Dean Ambrose, and had to drop it to Bray Wyatt inside the Elimination Chamber. Styles was rumoured to make the switch for the past couple of months, and the fact that he ended his rivalry with Shane this past week is a strong indication of AJ moving to the red brand.
WWE has reportedly been thinking about bringing Styles back on Monday Night RAW for sometime now, and with AJ out of the WWE Championship picture, it would be the perfect time to draft “The Phenomenal One” to the red brand.
Roman Reigns is currently the hottest property in professional wrestling. Reigns defeated – and retired – The Undertaker at WrestleMania 33, and depending on who you ask, it was either a good thing, or the worst thing imaginable. As seen on Monday Night RAW, the fans weren’t thrilled with Roman defeating The Undertaker, and now that WrestleMania has passed us by, WWE will be looking to push Roman as the new face of the company.
Reports suggest that Roman would be moving to SmackDown Live, with Styles’ migration to Monday Night RAW. Roman hasn’t been able to insert himself into the title picture on RAW, and it is believed that Roman would thrive on SmackDown Live. Roman has a history with Bray and Orton, and WWE would be able to slot him into the title picture without much build up.
