Fernando Torres in ‘stable’ condition after suffering head injury in La Liga match

Former Liverpool and Chelsea striker Fernando Torres suffered a sickening head injury in the 85th minute of Atletico Madrid’s La Liga match against Deportivo last night, after colliding with Deportivo player Alex Bergantinos. A club statement released by Atletico stated that Torres was thankfully in a ‘stable’ condition, and was being monitored in the hospital.

In the seconds right after the clash, worried players from both teams surrounded Torres, coming to his immediate aid as medical staff too rushed on to the pitch. Atletico coach Diego Simeone could be seen fuming with the officials on the sidelines about the challenge that led to the injury.

Simeone later said, “Worried, nevous. Those are the feelings after he suffered such a heavy blow. We heard the blow from the bench, we saw how he fell and we were afraid. We didn’t know if that noise was Fernando’s neck or not. They are unfortunate situations that happen in matches and we’re hoping for the best for Fernando.”

The match between the two teams ended 1-1, with Deportivo taking the lead in the 13th minute before Antoine Griezmann equalized for the visitors with a sublime shot in the 68th minute.

After the match, Torres himself issued a statement which said, “It was just a scare. I hope to come back very soon.” Watch the entire incident involving Torres’ injury below.
