Mithali Raj was 34 runs short of becoming the highest run-scorer in ODIs before the start of India’s clash against South Africa. But she was dismissed on the first ball of her innings, and the history making moment had to wait. With a single towards point in the next game against Australia, she brought up her 5993rd run surpassing England’s Charlotte Edwards and becoming the new record holder. She went on to score an excellent 69 after the early wicket of Smriti Mandhana, and also in the process became the first woman to cross 6000 runs in ODIs.
