The BCCI announced India’s squad for the upcoming tour to South Africa in January today, with fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah included in India’s Test team for the first time. Parthiv Patel was also included in the squad as a back-up wicketkeeper, which was picked by the selection panel led by MSK Prasad.
Bumrah has picked 89 wickets in 26 first-class games, and has been picked in the team for his performances for India in the limited overs formats too. On the other hand, Parthiv Patel has been India’s back-up wicketkeeper for a long time now, taking over duties when Wriddhiman Saha was absent in the series against England last year. He scored 42, 67*, 15 and 71 in the three Tests.
Hardik Pandya too has been recalled to the team after he was rested for the series against Sri Lanka, undergoing strength and rehabilitation training in the mean time. Spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been left out of the side for the tour, with Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja chosen as the spin options. Vijay Shankar has been excluded as well, after being part of India’s side in the second and third Tests against Sri Lanka.
India’s pace attack for the tour consists of Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jaspreet Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
