AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens last night to become the new WWE United States Champion
AJ Styles was scheduled to face Kevin Owens at Battleground for the WWE United States Championship. In fact, it was earlier this week on SmackDown Live, that Styles won the Independence Day Battle Royal, to become the number one contender for the US title.
However, in what can be best described as a shocking turn of events, AJ Styles defeated Kevin Owens during a live event last night at Madison Square Garden to win the WWE United States Championship.
AJ Styles crowned the new United States Champion
WWE went to the iconic Madison Square Garden for a house show last evening, and one of the main bouts on the card saw AJ Styles challenging Kevin Owens for the prestigious United States Championship.
Both the Superstars were originally scheduled to face each other at Battleground PPV in Philadelphia for the title.

However, ‘The Phenomenal One’ did the unthinkable, by beating Kevin Owens clean last night, winning the United States Championship in the process!
It is not often that titles change hands during house shows in WWE. The other recent title change that happened, was when Finn Balor lost the NXT Championship to Samoa Joe last year.
The rematch will go down at Battleground PPV, with AJ Styles walking in as the champion. Kevin Owens won the United States Championship couple of months ago against Chris Jericho on SmackDown Live, after initially dropping the title to ‘The Man of 1,004 Holds”.
Kevin Owens defeated AJ Styles at Backlash by count out, and defended the title last week on SmackDown Live against Chad Gable. Owens now is a former two time United States Champion, while this is AJ Styles’ first run as the United States Champion in WWE.
