All-rounder Axar Patel has been called up as replacement for the suspended Ravindra Jadeja for the final Test against Sri Lanka in Pallekele.
The 23-year-old was part of the India A squad playing the 50-over tri-series in South Africa. He finished the team’s second-highest wicket-taker in the series with seven wickets in four games and an economy rate of 4.11.
On Day 4 of the Colombo Test, Jadeja threw the ball back at the batsman Dimuth Karunaratne despite him standing firmly in his crease, after the left-arm spinner fielded the ball off his own bowling. The on-field umpires deemed it as “in a dangerous manner” as it narrowly missed Karunaratne. Jadeja admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson without a need of a formal hearing, brining his tally of demerit points to six within a 24-month period following the incident and triggered a one-match suspension.
The Pallekele Test begins on August 12 as India look to make it a clean sweep in the series with a victory.
