Indian cricket fans might be looking forward to the Test series against Australia which starts on February 23rd, but before that, there is the small matter of the one-off Test against Bangladesh in Hyderabad beginning February 9th.
And Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha has issued a warning cry – there is no room for any complacency when the team takes to the field against the Bangla tigers. Speaking before joining his teammates in Hyderabad, he said,
“Ranking-wise one may think they will be easier opponents on paper. But we cannot underestimate them before taking on to the field. It all depends on the situation on a given day. We have to approach the situation accordingly, everyone wants to do well on the field. You may not do what you think. It’s about converting your thoughts into a good performance.”
The Hyderabad Test will be the ninth time that India and Bangladesh will be facing off in the longest format of the game, but the first time in India. It presents the Indian players with a good opportunity to prepare for the series against Australia, after a long series against England.
Saha has been in terrific form himself in the domestic circuit, with his unbeaten double ton against Gujarat in the Irani Cup taking Rest of India to victory. He also helped Bengal to four consecutive wins in the T20 zonal league, top scoring in Bengal’s run chase against Assam in one of the matches.
After missing the last three tests against England due to a hamstring injury, Saha’s focus is now firmly on the Bangladesh Test, and the 32 year old is not looking further than that. “I don’t know when are the Aussies coming but as of now the focus is on Bangladesh Test. After they’re here we will think about it,” he remarked.
Bangladesh have shocked India on a few occasions when the teams have played in the past, and Saha’s teammates would do well to heed his advice. Here are a few Bangladeshi players India should watch out for, when the sides lock horns on February 9th at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
